Program Description

The Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies Program (Pilot Program) provides seed funding for collaborative research, team-building activities and development of novel technologies and approaches.

Program Aim

The aim of the Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies (Pilot) Program is to spur clinical and translational innovation through a pilot program that facilitates multidisciplinary team science and supports the testing of novel technologies and methods as well as solutions to translational roadblocks. To achieve this aim, the Pilot Program has established four objectives:
  • Objective 1: Break down barriers to translational science through wide-ranging pilot funding mechanisms.
  • Objective 2: Leverage the Pilot Program as a platform for testing, evaluating and continuously improving CTSI resources and services.
  • Objective 3: Solicit and select proposals with high potential to accelerate research or address obstacles to translation.
  • Objective 4: Track project and program progress.

Program Services

The Pilot Program administers the following competitive funding mechanisms:

  • Catalyst Grants ($1,000 to $5,000) to support team-building activities, including seminars; symposia; meetings related to development of courses, proposals or partnerships.
  • Team Science Awards ($25,000 to $100,000) to enable multidisciplinary teams to develop preliminary data for extramural funding.
  • Pathfinder Awards (up to $50,000) to support the study of novel methods or approaches to scientific problems or roadblocks by multidisciplinary teams.
  • Core Research Vouchers (up to $10,000) for services from a research core.
