Application Instructions
Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility and application require the following:
- Enrollment in a doctoral research degree-granting program at one of the CTSI partners (PhD or equivalent);
- Pursue research training full-time (generally defined as 40 hours per week);
- US citizen or permanent resident status;
- A personal statement describing research training and career goals that relate to the TL1 focus (1-page limit);
- An NIH biosketch or curriculum vitae (CV);
- Letter of support from a mentor that de-scribes the applicant’s qualifications for and fit with the TL1 program (2-page limit). If a mentor is not identified, applicants should identify who they want to work with;
- Letters of recommendation from at least two academic faculty familiar with the ap-plicant’s work (2-page limit per letter); and
- Academic transcripts.

Expected appointment start date: October 1, 2026
Funding
Funding is renewed on an annual basis based on academic excellence and progress within the program. Predoctoral trainees are eligible for up to three years of TL1 funding, including:
- Annual stipend: ~$28,788
- Tuition for doctoral degree
This program is funded from a TL1 grant to the UCLA CTSI and is identical to an NRSA T32.
