UCLA Clinical & Translational Research Center (CTRC)
The UCLA Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) supports clinical trials across all therapeutic areas and age groups including first-in-human clinical trials, Phase I studies and gene, stem cell, and regenerative medicine therapeutics. The UCLA CTRC has overseen the on-study conduct of over 750 clinical trials across a diverse group of departments and subspecialties within UCLA Health and the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine as well as campus departments such as Psychology. This has included oversight and conduct of registrational trials with numerous Food and Drug Administration new drug approvals in the past decade.
UCLA CTRC physical space consists of 8 private exam rooms, 3 private procedure suites, and 1 infusion room with 4 infusion chairs. Additional rooms include a dedicated area for research subject interviews, a phlebotomy area, a playroom for pediatric patients, and a research kitchen. The CTRC also houses the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine Alpha Clinic dedicated to provide first-in-class “on-study” infrastructure support to gene and cell therapy clinical trials.
The CTRC team consists of registered nurses who are trained in clinical research through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). They are also certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and chemotherapy and gene therapy administration. CTRC is staffed with nurse practitioners who can obtain informed consent, conduct clinical evaluations, and perform protocol mandated procedures, under the direction of the study PI. Other members of the team include medical assistants, a research dietician, and an administrative support team who assists with budgets, billing, and coordination of appointments. Hours of operation for the CTRC are Monday through Friday from 7 am until 7 pm, with after-hours and weekend appointments available upon request.
The CTRC Without Walls (CTRC Wow) service line provides mobile research support in all Health System inpatient and outpatient areas, as well as areas of upper campus and in the greater Los Angeles community. Additional research services offered within the CTRC include a state-of-the-art bio-nutrition core, including specialized menu preparations, analysis of nutrition data, and anthropometry. Other equipment and services include standard 12-lead ECGs, infusion pumps and syringe pumps, and an Olympus High-Definition Narrow Band Imaging System, that allows for procedures such as colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and bronchoscopy for adult studies.
