UCLA-Westwood Clinical & Translational Research Center (CTRC)
The UCLA Westwood Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) supports clinical trials across all therapeutic areas and age groups including first-in-human clinical trials, Phase I studies and gene, stem cell, and regenerative medicine therapeutics. The UCLA CTRC physical space consists of 8 private exam rooms, 3 private procedure suites, and 1 infusion room with 4 infusion chairs. Additional rooms include a dedicated area for research subject interviews, a phlebotomy area, a playroom for pediatric patients, and a research kitchen.
The CTRC team consists of registered nurses who are trained in clinical research through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). They are also certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and chemotherapy administration. CTRC is staffed with nurse practitioners who can facilitate obtaining informed consent, conducting clinical evaluations, and performing protocol mandated procedures. Other members of the team include medical assistants, a research dietician, and an administrative support team who assists with budgets, billing, and coordination of appointments. Hours of operation for the CTRC are Monday through Friday from 7 am until 7 pm, with after-hours and weekend appointments available upon request.
The CTRC provides services not only in its own location but also mobile staff for assistance in all Health System inpatient and outpatient areas, as well as some areas of upper campus. Services offered within the CTRC include a state-of-the-art bio-nutrition core, including specialized menu preparations, analysis of nutrition data, and anthropometry. CTRC is also considered a core facility by the UCLA Institutional Biosafety Committee and is approved to administer human gene therapy products. Other equipment and services include standard 12-lead ECGs, infusion pumps and syringe pumps, and an Olympus High-Definition Narrow Band Imaging System, that allows for procedures such as colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and bronchoscopy for adult studies. CTRC projects include CTRC Without Walls (CTRC-WoW), a mobile health unit to increase special population engagement as well as quality and efficiency of clinical trials by providing clinical trial labor resources for investigators, and the Phase One Developmental Therapeutics and Cellular Gene Therapies Unit (CTRC POD-CGT).
