CTSI TL1 fellow Joseph Viana receives a UC Global Food Initiative “30 Under 30” Award
CTSI TL1 Fellow Joseph Viana is among the six UCLA students and alumni to receive the University of California Global Food Initiative's 30 Under 30 Award.
In collaboration with researchers and nutritionists, Viana implemented an evidence-based trial of vending machine fare at UCLA, designed to increase sales of healthier snacks without compromising revenue. His work sparked a review of UC-wide policies around vending machines, and spurred discussion at a national level with Partnership for a Healthier America, which works with the private sector and Michelle Obama to make healthier choices.
Viana, 28, is pursuing his doctorate in the department of health policy and management in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
