NCATS highlights barbershop study aimed at lowering high blood pressure
Dr. Ronald Victor, CTSI community engagement and research investigator and cardiologist and director of the Hypertension Center in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, and his research team from Cedars-Sinai and UCLA, had their research featured on the NCATS News website for their recent success in taking blood pressure testing into barbershops, enabling barbers to become health educators and refer patrons to pharmacists for treatment.
Their recent work in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that this community-engaged approach can dramatically lower blood pressure.
The CTSI-supported study, which was published online in March, has received 87,164 page views and ranks in the 99th percentile in social media hits compared to other NEJM articles. The research was disseminated by 87 media outlets, including the LA Times, the New York Times, CNN and ABC News.
