Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility and application require the following:

  1. Possess a research doctorate (PhD, ScD) or clinical doctorate (MD, DDS) from an accredited institution. Applicants with a clinical doctorate must have completed or be currently enrolled in an advanced research degree program (PhD, MS or equivalent, with other masters degrees considered);
  2. Pursue research training full-time (generally defined as 40 hours per week);
  3. US citizen or permanent resident status;
  4. A personal statement describing research training and career goals that relate to the TL1 focus (1,500-word limit, approximately 3 pages);
  5. An NIH biosketch or curriculum vitae (CV);
  6. Letters of recommendation from at least two academic faculty familiar with the applicant’s work (2-page limit per letter). If you are currently enrolled in a degree program, you can reuse those letters.

Expected appointment start date: July 1, 2025

Funding

Funding is renewed on an annual basis based on academic excellence and progress within the program. Postdoctoral trainees are eligible for up to two years of TL1 funding, including:

  • Annual stipend: ~$61,008 to $74,088 based on years of postdoctoral experience. The trainee’s home department is expected to supplement to the approved institutional level.
  • Tuition for relevant graduate degree.

This program is funded from a TL1 grant to the UCLA CTSI and is identical to an NRSA T32.
