New NIH application guidelines coming in 2020
In a recent Notice (NOT-OD-20-026), NIH notified the research community that it intends to release new grant application forms and instructions (FORMS-F) for applications due on or after May 25, 2020. Until that date, applicants will continue to use the current FORMS-E. A High-Level Summary of Form Changes can be found here.
Some of major changes include:
- Cover Page Supplement will clarify guidance on Human Fetal Tissue
- Assignment Request Forms will remove the ability to exclude awarding components and study sections while adding a text box for “Rationale for assignment suggestions”
- Human Subjects and Clinical Trials Updates will include:
- “Inclusion of Women and Minorities and Children” will be separated into two documents: 1) Inclusion of Women and Minorities and 2) Inclusion of Individuals Across the Lifespan
- “Brief Summary” attachment is being removed
- “Narrative Study Description” is being renamed “Detailed Description”
- Career Development and Fellowship Award Supplement Forms will add a new attachment, “Description of Candidate’s Contribution to Program Goals”
- All other PHS 398 forms will have updated expiration dates
