The Center for Leading Innovation and Collaboration (CLIC), the coordinating center for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program, has selected a multidisciplinary team of CTSA Program hubs and city and county health organizations centered in Los Angeles and Chicago to assist in producing a Synergy Paper. The goal of this paper is to advance the field of translational science and build collaborations within and external to the Program, while also meeting the academic needs of co-authors to produce high-quality, joint scientific publications.

The awarded application titled "Bridging research, policy and practice through partnerships with local health departments" will drive innovations in clinical care and population health in Los Angeles and Chicago. The paper will share a proposed solution that builds on two existing partnerships in Los Angeles and Chicago – the Los Angeles DHS-UCLA-USC Implementation Science Program and the Chicago Consortium for Community Engagement (C3) – which is a network of academic research institutions and community stakeholders. Ultimately, the goal of the paper is to provide an academic-public partnership model that is adopted by other hubs and benefits population health and care delivery on a national scale.

The writing team currently includes authors from five CTSA Program institutions and two public health organizations. UCLA CTSI and LA County team members include:

  • Arleen F. Brown, M.D., Ph.D., General internist and health services researcher with expertise in quality of care for older adults and minorities and leader of the UCLA CTSI Community Engagement program
  • Moira Inkelas, Ph.D., M.P.H., Co-leader of the UCLA CTSI Population Health program along with the previous Chief Science Officer of the LA County Department of Public Health and the current director of chronic disease and injury prevention for DPH
  • Deborah K. Herman, M.C.M., Project Manager at the UCLA CTSI
  • Hal F. Yee, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Medicine, UCSF
