NIA Resource Center for Minority Aging Research – UCLA Center for Health Innovation and Maximizing Eldercare (RCMAR CHIME)
Funded by the National Institute of Aging, RCMAR is a national program with 18 sites including 9 focused on Alzheimer’s Disease research and 9 traditional Centers. The UCLA RCMAR Center for Health Innovation and Maximizing Eldercare (CHIME) is administered by the Division of GIM & HSR in the Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. UCLA RCMAR CHIME provides mentorship, education, and pilot awards for research projects focused on older adults to early and mid-career faculty and postdoctoral fellows who have a demonstrated commitment to addressing health outcomes among older adult populations who experience high rates of disease burden or risk. RCMAR CHIME Scientists attend monthly meetings that include a methodological seminar and a works-in-progress session, where they receive feedback on their projects, manuscripts, or grant applications. RCMAR CHIME scientists also present their work at biannual Scientific Retreats and at national meetings, which provide an excellent opportunity for networking and obtaining feedback on projects and career advice. The RCMAR CHIME also strongly supports and guides scientists conducting community-based participatory research in Southern California. Program Directors as well as faculty and community partner mentors continue their 20-year track record of mentoring and collaborating with faculty from many southern California universities, but especially Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and University of California Riverside. The program also has linkages with University of Southern California (USC)/UCLA Biodemography and Population Health Center which connects to the many aging research resources at USC for research purposes. Additionally, many GIM & HSR faculty have appointments in the UCLA School of Public Health and/or at RAND Corporation and Pardee RAND Graduate School, and are currently working collaboratively on funded research with other schools and departments on the UCLA campus.
