Pediatric Neuromuscular Clinic at UCLA
Established in 2009, the Pediatric Neuromuscular Disease Clinic meets twice a month and the majority of patients seen have Becker or Duchenne muscular dystrophy (B/DMD). Additional patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), myotonic dystrophy, or congenital muscular dystrophy are seen on select clinic days. The clinic can accommodate patients for multidisciplinary visits. Most B/DMD patients are seen two times per year for routine care and more frequently when needed. Physicians available in the multidisciplinary clinic include medical specialists (e.g., neurology, genetics, cardiology), pediatricians, neurologists, neurology fellows, and pediatric and adult neurology residents. The clinic can serve both adult and pediatric patients; most clinic staff members, including Dr. Perry Shieh, are fully credentialed to provide specialist services to both children and adults. Older patients who do not require child-related services are seen in a multidisciplinary clinic or on dedicated days, depending on insurance coverage and needs.
