Background:
Dr. DaShawn Hickman is an Administration and Quality Improvement Fellow and Assistant Medical Director for the Emergency Department at Harbor-UCLA. He received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from Yale University. He completed his medical training in the NIH T32-funded Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) at Case Western Reserve University. His Biomedical Engineering(MS)/Pathology(PhD) work, funded by an American Heart Association Clinical Health Profession Student Training Grant, focused on improving hemostasis and survival in Trauma by targeted drug-delivery with synthetic platelets. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Highland Hospital. Now, a CTSI TL1 Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr. Hickman is motivated to combine his research skills in hemostasis in trauma with his clinical acumen to investigate the implementation and feasibility of a Prehospital Blood Transfusion Program. His long-term goal is to use his training as an emergency medicine physician-scientist and social activist to lead a health care system aimed at eliminating health disparities.
