Matthew Coates, PhD

Research Interests:
Integrating systems science methods and approaches with formal causal inference frameworks, defining meaningful and policy-relevant causal estimands for translational research, modeling the population health impact of health systems and public health interventions

Background:
Matthew Coates is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology at the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA. He received an AB in Neurobiology from Harvard University, with a minor in Global Health and Health Policy. He received a Master of Public Health in Global Health with a focus in Health Metrics and Evaluation from the University of Washington, where he worked at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation on the Global Burden of Disease Study. He conducted demographic, epidemiological, health systems, and health economic research for the Lancet Commission on Reframing NCDs and Injuries for the Poorest Billion (the Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission) as a researcher at the Program in Global Non-communicable Disease and Social Change at Harvard Medical School. Matthew earned a PhD in Epidemiology at UCLA, supported by the NIH/NCI T32-funded Cancer Epidemiology Training Program, focusing on epidemiological methods and causal inference.
