On May 21, 2019, CTSI co-sponsored the annual UCLA Undergraduate Research Poster Day at the Pauley Pavilion. Hosted by the Undergraduate Research Center - Sciences, the event is held each year during Undergraduate Research Week at UCLA. The Poster Day welcomes students in the life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering to present their research.

Several CTSI Research Associate Program (RAP) students presented their projects to faculty, fellow students, and staff. These included:

  • Manpreet K. Singh and Sonia P. Lele presented on assessing the validity of QRISK3 at predicting cardiovascular events in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Their mentors included Drs. Mei Liang, Lori Sahakian, Lisa Zhu and Maureen McMahon.
  • Michelle Tenggara and Dean Renna, with the support of their mentors Drs. Richard Olmstead and Michael R. Irwin, presented on the investigation of the differential effects of inflammation and depression between males and females.
  • Along with mentors Drs. Michelle L. Korn, Zhaoping Li and Myke Federman, students Ryan R. McLaughlin, Ankita Nair and Victoria D. Ford presented on the role of vitamin C in pediatric critical care.
  • Shagufah Ajmal, Dean Renna Jr., Angela Wang, and Jessica Yang presented on CTSI-RAP and how the program is fostering the next generation of clinical and biomedical research. Drs. Noah Federman and Laurie Shaker-Irwin served as mentors.

The Poster Day had an impressive 1,054 student presenters and a total of 828 posters. 128 posters had more than one presenter, ranging from 2-4 presenters in these cases. The posters represented students in 38 different majors and represented faculty in every area of study except law (law faculty mentor students but did not present posters at this year's event). 63% (518) of the posters were in the sciences; of those 55% were students mentored by faculty in the David Geffen School of Medicine.
