Harbor trauma symposium draws community participation

The Harbor Trauma Symposium was held Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. The goal of the program was to identify aspects of care that needed to be understood by practitioners when assessing and treating trauma with diverse populations.

The event was organized by Dr. Kabir Yadav, vice chair for academic affairs and associate professor of emergency medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and was supported in part by a CTSI Catalyst Award. 

The focus group sessions included the following topics: Secondary Trauma and Compassion Fatigue, How to Support Communities in Advocating for Change in Addressing Trauma, Culturally Inclusive Care - What Practitioners Need to Know about Assessing and Treating Trauma with Diverse Populations, and Peer Support Services - Leveraging Peer Support Specialists in Trauma Recovery. Participants included local community organizations and members.

The UCLA CTSI Community Engagement and Research Program, which included Lundquist Institute/Harbor-UCLA personnel, provided community support in the breakout sessions, aiding facilitators in the breakout focus group sessions.
