The NIH offers administrative supplements to meet increased costs that are within the scope of approved, existing NIH Awards. PA-18-591 provides additional funding and many agencies participate in Notices of Special Interest (NOSIs) that indicate specific interest in urgent research needs or high priority topics for specific awarding NIH Institutes and Centers (IC). Key features to note for administrative supplements include:

  • Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.
  • Due dates, award amounts, and page limits may vary by awarding IC and applicants are encouraged to discuss potential requests with the awarding IC prior to applying. See the individual websites for each IC to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Administrative supplements are much less competitive than peer-reviewed grant funding mechanisms, and can provide an excellent source of additional funding.
  • Budget requests must follow the budget cycle of the existing grant.
  • Supplemental funding may not extend beyond the existing grant’s project end date.
  • PIs who hold active awards listed in the PA announcement are generally eligible to submit a request for an Administrative Supplement to the parent grant.

As a first step, PIs should contact the NIH staff who are administering the parent grant. Some institutions have specific application instructions and requirements. After approval is obtained, CTSI’s Grants Submission Unit may be available to help support the application.
