Paul Lukac named UCLA Health’s first Chief AI Officer

The UCLA CTSI is excited to share that former CTSI TL1 postdoc trainee, Paul Lukac, MD, MBA, MS will be stepping into a newly created leadership role as UCLA Health’s inaugural Chief AI Officer (CAIO). As CAIO, Dr. Lukac will lead the strategic development and integration of artificial intelligence across UCLA Health.
Dr. Lukac brings a unique blend of clinical, academic, and technical expertise to this position. He earned his MD from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and holds both an MBA and an MS in Clinical Research from UCLA. He also completed a Clinical Informatics Fellowship at UCLA Health where he focused on clinical decision support and cost reduction.
Since joining UCLA Health in 2022 as an Ambulatory Physician Informaticist, Dr. Lukac has consistently driven innovation in artificial intelligence. Currently, he serves as Director of Applied AI within the Office of Health Informatics and Analytics (OHIA), where he plays a central role in shaping AI strategy. One of his standout accomplishments includes leading the ambient listening pilot that ultimately led to UCLA Health’s partnership with Nabla, one of the leading ambient AI assistants.
In addition to his ongoing academic role as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Lukac is also a former CTSI TL1 postdoc trainee from 2020-2022.
