The Office of Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (HEDI) was established in 2021 to serve in a pivotal role in building and executing system-wide strategies to strengthen UCLA Health’s organizational culture to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) amongst its staff, patients, and community.

Health Equity is defined as when everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. UCLA Health believes that a diverse and inclusive health care workforce and environment results in better care, service and health outcomes for patients. UCLA Health also believes that a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion will result in greater productivity, innovation and engagement for staff and patients.

UCLA Health is committed to building stronger work relationships and providing high-quality and equitable health care to the diverse patient populations it serves. UCLA Health became one of the first health care systems in the country to fund an executive position and office to advance health equity among all patient populations. UCLA Health has appointed a Chief of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the UCLA Hospital & Clinic System; implemented equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-bias training requirement for managers and executives; increased efforts to recruit, train, and promote a diverse workforce and management positions; identified areas of underserved populations to expand access to health care; and developed new data structures and programs to ensure equitable care to diverse patients and communities.
