DGSOM Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI)
The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (DGSOM) believes that healthcare is a human right. The DGSOM is educating the next generation of physicians, physician-scientists, and researchers with that belief in mind. The core values of justice, equity, and diversity inclusion are inseparable from our institutional goals of excellence in all tenets of healthcare, research, education, and community engagement.
At DGSOM, the core values of diversity and inclusion are inseparable from the institutional goals of excellence in all tenets of healthcare, research, education, and community engagement. With the active support of its leadership, DGSOM is committed to recruiting and retaining outstanding students, residents, fellows, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds who represent the communities served by the University of California.
DGSOM’s goal is to foster an environment that honors the unique perspectives, contributions, and expertise of our community, and elevates and amplifies those lived realities. Further, by focusing on the experiences of those who have been traditionally marginalized, we demonstrate our unwavering dedication to achieve justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
JEDI initiatives include efforts such as the Anti-racism Roadmap, a co-created strategy to ensure racial justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The commitments and priorities of this program represent the first step in the planning, development and implementation process in collaboration with the DGSOM Faculty Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the DGSOM Staff Racial Justice Task Force, and the entire DGSOM community of trainees, staff, and faculty.
DGSOM makes resources available in support of this mission. Educational resources include health equity resources such as the Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (HEDI) Toolkit and resources for MD students, graduate trainees, residents, fellows, and postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff. Support resources include child care and nursing, disabilities and accommodations, legal counseling, and mental health services. There is also a robust system of reporting resources and resolution services.
Professional development resources empower lifelong learners to strengthen essential competencies and stay informed on emerging issues. JEDI has a number of signature programs and initiatives such as the JEDI Academic Mentorship (JAM) fellowship, the Bruin Scholars program, the Road to Residency annual program, conferences and events, and other mentorship opportunities.
