Medical Preparation and Education Program (MEDPEP)
The MEDPEP Program aims to engage participants in a year-long academic success, retention, and leadership training program that encourages and empowers underrepresented and disadvantaged students to pursue health care careers and to serve in health professional shortage areas. MEDPEP is a 9-month program structured into a welcome day, six Saturday workshops, a virtual pre-health conference, and monthly check-ins with a peer mentor. The curriculum is designed to achieve specific outcomes in three domains:
• Knowledge: health policy, health career options, financial literacy, transfer from college to a four-year university and pre-health career of interest
• Attitude: know yourself, develop your personal and leadership voice and vision, self-direction and confidence, team-work, and leadership
• Skills: what study skills work for self, academic and personal planning, resourcefulness, advocating or self and community, how to network, and to think critically
A MEDPED participant examines the effects of research and public opinion on the creation of health care practices and policies affecting professional shortage areas and health disparities; understands and elevates their personal leadership voice; develops study skills, self-advocacy, networking practices; and is better able to understand their experience and how it relates to choosing a career in health care.
